Quickly reconnecting Manhattan and Brooklyn along the F-Line after Superstorm Sandy
Damaged by Superstorm Sandy, the Rutgers Tube tunnel needed immediate repairs due to its connection between Manhattan and Brooklyn via East Broadway and York Street Stations on the subway’s F-Line. To help fast-track the repairs, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Design and Construction Company established a design-build contract for the repair. They selected us to provide design compliance and resident engineering services.
Key elements of the project involved replacement of subway tracks, repair of tunnel duct bench, and installation of a cable management rack system for the entire length of the Rutgers Tube including signal, communications fiber optic, cell service, radio antenna, and cell service power and antenna cables. The project also included upgrades at East Broadway Station focusing on platform renewal, wall tile replacement, platform edge removal, replacement and leak mitigation, and installation of a new platform stair.
Due to its utilization of the design-build method, the Rutgers Tube Rehabilitation project’s construction was the fastest of all post-Sandy tube rehabilitations.
