Delivering a strategy that helps conserve and manage resources while attracting greater numbers of people to a beautiful area

The Red River Gorge of Eastern Kentucky is an area of incredible beauty, unique geology, and rare biological diversity with over 42,000 acres of protected lands. In recognition of the region's tourism potential and economic challenges, Red River Economic Development charged Stantec with developing a regional tourism strategy and destination resort master plan for the four-county area.

Our strategy reflects the belief that future tourism development in the Gorge should be driven by principles based on sustainable economic development, natural resource protection, creating better job opportunities for residents, consistency with the character of the region, and achieving balance between carrying capacity of the land and facilities with the demands of tourism. Additionally, the strategy highlights the understanding that cooperative partnerships between the county tourism boards, city and county governments, federal and state agencies, and advocacy organizations will be essential to achieving success on a regional and national scale.

Throughout the process, the client said our team “listened patiently and worked diligently to incorporate the local feedback into their plans. That genuine outreach and willingness to listen helped build a foundation of trust among the stakeholders, some of whom were originally skeptical.”
