Reconstructing and enhancing two vital runways
The pavement surface for both of Pittsfield Municipal Airport’s runways had exceeded their original design life and were showing signs of deterioration that could lead to safety hazards. In order to improve safety and usability, Stantec was brought in to help.
Our team provided initial planning, environmental permitting, data collection, final design, and construction phase services. Our design included the reconstruction of two runways to eliminate safety hazards caused by deteriorating runway pavement and non-FAA (Federal Airline Administration) compliant airfield elements. The runway intersection was raised to meet FAA longitudinal grade requirements, and runway safety areas were widened and flattened. A crosswind runway was shortened to provide adequate runway safety areas at either end while avoiding relocating a town road or disturbing wetlands and narrowed to eliminate deteriorating paved shoulders. Existing taxiways were removed, and new taxiways were constructed in more suitable locations to improve aircraft taxiing operations. The design also included lighting, signage, and drainage enhancements.
The resulting project increased overall safety for airport users, decreased monthly electrical costs for the facility, and eliminated the need for significant pavement maintenance activities.
