Capturing the relationship between land and sea
Stantec designed the original Santiago airport terminal over 15 years ago. Based on that experience, a strong relationship with fellow consortium member Capitel S.A., and a deep and diverse airport portfolio, we were selected for the airport’s significant expansion.
Our design concept allocated the original terminal to domestic flights, and the new terminal to international ones. The challenge was relating the new terminal to the original building in a way that would allow passengers and airline staff to connect easily between international and domestic flights. Convention dictates that airports beyond a certain size implement a shuttle service, rail link, or other device to mechanically transport passengers over these longer distances.
A temperate climate, a receptive client, and a passionate commitment to passenger experience conspired towards another solution: turn the expansion so that both entrances to the expansion and the original terminal faced each other, creating a walkable, open air plaza between the two. Combined with a highly expressive roof intended to capture the relationship between land and sea, this outdoor connection experience is sure to position the airport for success.
