Keeping planes safe in the air also means keeping them safe on ground with up-to-date rehabilitated runways
It might be interesting to know how many aircraft renowned air traffic controller, “Boston John” Melecio, has guided to Runway 9-27 at Boston’s Logan International Airport during his career. We know it’s a very big number, and the wear and tear of those take-offs and landings is why we were asked to provide consulting services for the Rehabilitation of Runway 9-27 Project, to upgrade this busy and important piece of pavement.
Logan is one of the busiest airports in the US—and for more than three decades, we’ve provided the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) airside civil and electrical design, as well as construction management services. This project covered the rehabilitation of approximately 6,500 feet of the 7,001-foot runway. Specific components of our design included runway pavement rehabilitation inclusive of paved shoulders, the intersection of Runway 15R-33L, and seven intersecting taxiways, all to be rehabilitated to beyond the Runway 9-27 safety area. Runway centerline lights, base cans, raceways, and circuitry were also removed and replaced with new. Runway edge lighting was replaced and new infrastructure for the foreign object detection systems was also included. All work was phased and completed in a fashion that minimized impacts to airport operations without compromise to airport safety and security.
Stantec and Massport have partnered to successfully complete the three most recent Runway Rehabilitation Projects at Logan Airport while maintaining airfield and construction safety, all while minimizing impacts to airfield operations.
