We’re coordinating with the airport and FAA to make corrective changes that improve overall safety at the William P. Hobby airport
William P. Hobby Airport has two hot spots where multiple taxiways and runways intersect which can lead to pilot confusion and possible incursions. Houston Airports has been working with the Federal Aviation administration (FAA) to correct these issues. While the original focus was to correct non-standard taxiways, further FAA review determined the seldom used Runway 17-35 was also a contributor.
As an owner’s representative for Houston Airports, Stantec was engaged to manage the design consultation, plan reviews, and project coordination with Hobby Airport Operations. The deficiencies will be corrected with two projects—the first to decommission and remove Runway 17-35. The second project will demolish and realign several taxiways to enter runways at a perpendicular angle as well as relocate the vehicle service road and fuel tanks. We coordinated with the FAA on Airport Improvement Program grants and reimbursables and coordinated the environmental assessment with multiple FAA technical and legal reviews.
The runway demolition project is expected to begin in 2021 and the non-standard taxiways project is currently under design. Correction of these non-standard conditions will provide clear taxiway paths and eliminate confusion to significantly increase safety.
