NigerHeritage Niamey Musée du Fleuve

Designing a net-positive energy cultural center inspired by historic earthen structures

Award-winning architecture tells the story of Niger’s natural and cultural heritage

Located in Niamey, Niger’s capital city, the Musée du Fleuve is a net-positive energy cultural center on the Niger River that tells the story of the country’s natural and cultural heritage. Inspired by the capital’s original gathering of small agricultural villages, our design draws from the ancient form and materiality of historic granaries—masonry galleries house the unique collection of Niger’s natural and cultural artifacts. The galleries recall the historic earthen structures in a new and dynamic interpretation, employing earthen architecture clad with artisan-created decorative tiles developed by Nigerian craftspeople.

Our award-winning design incorporates double Trombe walls, natural vegetation, solar chimneys, active photo-voltaic array, natural ventilation, and river water cooling. An educational pathway to and throughout the Musée creates convenient wayfinding and orientation, providing opportunities to explore exhibits or view the river’s ecosystem and the city of Niamey—or visitors can relax in a river-front café. Native trees and vegetation are found along the pathway that’s covered by a hybrid fabric of glass and photovoltaic solar cells providing shade and energy.

Visitors will find a deeper connection to the history, culture, and nature of Niger as they take in all the Musée du Fleuve has to offer.
