Innovation in transportation planning sheds light on the travel patterns of Monmouth County visitors
Monmouth County is home to a variety of events and tourist destinations that attract visitors and create significant regional economic benefits. But the resulting traffic congestion has a negative impact on visitors and residents, local businesses, and the environment. To better understand visitor travel patterns and solve congestion problems, the County embarked on a plan to study event- and tourism-related travel demand and recommend solutions. They engaged us to help.
We evaluated visitor travel patterns for specific large events, such as the Monmouth County Fair, as well as general tourism related to the region’s beaches and agricultural resources. Conducting detailed travel analysis of visitor origins, routing, and arrival and departure flows, we selected seven destinations for detailed analysis—representing each type of tourism-generating event or venue in the county. We developed transportation demand management plans for each of the selected destinations, forming each plan to be used as a reference for other locations in the county hosting similar events or experiencing tourism-related traffic.
Our analysis and recommendations provided a detailed plan for the County and its communities to help mitigate event- and tourism-related traffic congestion. The County plans to continue working with their communities to implement these recommendations.
