Taking on underground springs and stormwater challenges with green infrastructure
The City of Lookout Mountain is found in the hilly mountain ridges on Georgia’s northwest border with Tennessee. Tracing its beginnings back to the 1920s, the city needed updating and we were there to assist. A key step towards redevelopment included finding solutions for antiquated municipal facilities situated on a triangular parcel of land. Older buildings, including the old fire hall, were tucked into the back corner of the parcel. Removal of other older buildings left an open but significantly sloping site.
We were engaged to plan and engineer the redevelopment of this municipal site with a focus on green infrastructure. The plan included rotating the old fire hall access for improved function and creating a new town center prominently and centrally located on the site. A focus on green infrastructure meant taking on stormwater challenges and design, that included the discovery and drainage of multiple underground springs. Treatment and reduction of peak flows was accomplished using a combination of pervious pavement, underground capture areas, and a small rain garden. We also provided a development-ready footprint for the next phase of construction—space for future retail development was identified and included in the stormwater calculations and design.
With our help, and a greener infrastructure, Lookout Mountain is ready to take on the future.
