Temporary facilities and creative solutions maintain water service, budget, and cut delivery time in half
For a century, the Lewiston Water Treatment Plant has been the primary source of water for the City of Lewiston. It was due to be replaced and the City selected us to help deliver a water treatment plant retrofit.
Our design-build team led the design development and water quality analysis in partnership with IMCO Construction. The greatest design challenge was maintaining continuous water service to the community while constructing the new facility in the original facility’s footprint. After a complete system supply evaluation and water quality and water chemistry evaluation, we successfully completed the retrofit using temporary treatment trailers.
The project replaced the City’s 100-year-old traditional water treatment plant with a new automated membrane facility. This new facility is designed to provide 10 million gallons per day (MGD)—38 million litres per day (MLD)—of clean fresh water from the Clearwater River source. The design and construction included space and planning for a logical increase in production to 15 MGD (57 MLD).
Completed on time and two years ahead of the community’s schedule, the project came within three percent of the initial budget. With the water treatment plant’s retrofit in place, the City of Lewiston can provide its communities with clean, fresh water from the Clearwater River.
