Renovating the Lafayette City Center to draw attention from industry peers and attract a strong talent base
Located amidst the hustle of Boston’s Downtown Crossing, Lafayette City Center is ideally situated to woo tech companies who want to set up close to their industry peers and talent base. The building’s existing two-level lobby was a dramatic space, but the deep space lacked a clear arrival sequence, and pockets of darkness made it difficult for visitors to navigate easily.
The design layers glass, steel, terrazzo, and warm wood tones to create a light and bright space evocative of tech-oriented retailers. To improve circulation, a glass stair draws visitors up from street level and along an angled marble wall to the elevators beyond. Ribbon-like lights dance along the ceiling and reinforce the path through the lobby to the elevator bank. The twinkling lights evoke the “bits and bytes” of information coursing through tech companies throughout the neighborhood. Patterned terrazzo floors reflect light and repeat the directionality of the lighting pattern. Olive ash wood adds warmth and texture to the space at the entry to the elevator banks and tenant spaces. Offbeat furniture in bright colors and bold patterns contrasts with the otherwise restrained and sophisticated palette.
