Radio station retrofit
Airing jazz and news for listeners in the Seattle area, the National Public Radio station, KNKX 88.5 FM—its call letters pronounced “connects”—needed to connect with a new downtown home for their Tacoma studio.
Working as the acoustics, vibration, and noise control consultant, in conjunction with JPC Architects, we transformed a beautiful historic building in downtown Tacoma for the public broadcaster’s new home. The interior complements the building’s exterior with new mechanical, electrical, technology, audiovisual, acoustics, and lighting in this 8,000 square-foot broadcasting space. Along with offices and soundproof studio rooms, the station includes the main production studio, master control room, and edit rooms. This fast-paced project required efficient coordination and included a large, open space near the entryway, where regular community events are held, including live music and conversations about important issues affecting the region.
Staff and visitors alike can enjoy a bright, new, vibrant space that speaks to the history of the downtown building.
