Keeping the waters flowing through aging infrastructure on the Kentucky River

Faced with the increasing challenge of overseeing and managing 14 locks and dams along the Kentucky River with original construction dating back to the early 1800s, the Kentucky River Association (KRA) needed to assess the condition these structures and determine which should receive priority consideration for future repairs or replacement. KRA reached out to our team to help.

In order to prioritize repairs, we developed a methodology that incorporated risk factors related to potential loss of pool, and associated consequences, in the event of a lock or dam failure. Field personnel inspected and assessed the physical condition of various elements. We then compiled conceptual repair schemes that would provide a short-term improvement in condition or reduction in risk, with an associated budget level cost for each repair.

At the conclusion of our study, we provided KRA with a comprehensive report of overall findings and a priority ranking of conceptual repairs with costs for each element. An appendix included site drawings annotated with condition assessment findings, results of the risk-based integrity analyses, site photos, repair cost derivations, and field notes and sketches.

Through these efforts, KRA can continue to achieve their core objectives of securing and protecting the Kentucky River as a water resource and to promote recreational use for years to come.
