Future-proof designs and a thoughtful construction approach to help keep the community moving
Weather and road salt in the northeast wreaks havoc on bridges, and such was the case with several bridges in Waterbury. Following an inspection of three I-89 bridges over Stowe Street and Thatcher Brook, we found that the north and southbound bridges needed deck replacements, while the 6-span, 434-foot long exit ramp bridge had to be replaced entirely.
We worked with VTrans to provide full design services for the replacements and created a traffic management plan to prevent heavy traffic build-up. Our jointless design for the exit ramp bridge replacement makes it the largest semi-integral bridge in the state, and it features technologies which make the bridge far more resilient than ever before. Another innovation we applied to the deck replacements of 46N and 46S was the use of flexible link slabs, which minimizes the potential for leaks and further deterioration.
