Hyperion 2035 Program
In Los Angeles, population growth, the region’s intense agricultural industry, reliance on a few water sources, and climate change are all placing immense pressure on its water supplies. The Hyperion 2035 program aims to address water security for the City of Los Angeles by locally sourcing up to 70 per cent of the City’s water and recycling 100 per cent of its wastewater.
In partnership with a major environmental services firm, we are working with the City to develop a planning framework to guide implementation of a major technological redesign of its Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. This technological shift will transition from current processes and systems—including high-purity oxygen activated sludge secondary treatment and ocean discharge—to a potable water production facility employing a membrane bioreactor-based potable water reuse train, making it one of the largest facilities in the world to use this technology.
With reservoirs experiencing historic low levels and climate change negatively impacting water sources like mountain snowpack, the time to act is now. The Hyperion 2035 program will play a critical role in enhancing the City of Los Angeles’ climate change resilience and drought resistance.
