Establishing a new recreational venue to promote community connections and draw visitors to Huron
In 2013, Huron city leaders unveiled an exciting new recreational venue for the community and visitors—the $10 million Splash Central aquatics facility and surrounding Central Park.
Selecting a site for the park was the first challenge for our team—beginning with coordinating multiple public meetings to get community input. Ultimately, the city settled on a four-block area near the city core, the former site of a century-old college campus, as the ideal location.
Thanks to a streamlined process, the design was able to be completed quickly—allowing the City to meet a deadline for a federal funding program that had never been tapped for this kind of project. The project also had enthusiastic community support with more than $4 million raised from private donors in just six weeks.
Splash Central can accommodate up to 1,500 visitors and includes three major water features: a shallow water leisure pool, a lazy river, and a 50M competitive pool. A rare find at a public facility, the park’s MasterBlaster™ waterslide is the only one of its kind within 500 miles.
For land lovers, the surrounding park includes playgrounds, a sensory garden, picnic shelters, and a walking trail.
All in all, Splash Central is a knockout recreational combination for Huron.
