Hailongtun Castle Heritage Site

Hailongtun Castle tells a story of cultural independence, strength, and survival in a region of mountainous terrain. Built as a military defense system during the Southern Song Dynasty, the castle was home to soldiers who defended the Bozhou Tusi Yang family for over 15 generations—until the family’s downfall in 1600. Today, Hailongtun Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most well-preserved Ming Dynasty castles in China.

The Hailongtun site consists of four different regions—the Hailongtun Castle (the Fortress), Hailongtun Lower Town, Horse-Keeping Town, and the Tea Farm—all connected by a planned transportation system. We designed the heritage site to offer an array of cultural experiences for each of these areas, including historical outdoor performances, local craft and cuisine opportunities, and guided tours. The Hailongtun Lower Town was designed as a hub for visitors to arrive and take their first glimpse into the region’s story. From there, they can visit the Tea Farm, hear the war drums of the past, and stay the night in a castle hotel inspired by Ming Dynasty architecture.

Our designers worked closely with local archaeological experts to understand the historical significance, regional terrain, and cultural sensitivities within the site. A cooperative effort was made to produce the most educational, entertaining, and exciting experience for all who visit the site.
