Providing 25 miles of scenic pathway alongside a gulf highway in the Florida Keys
The 106 mile Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail (FKOTH) was originally conceived by Florida Governor Lawton Chiles as a labor of love. Since the approval of the FKOTH master plan in 2000, support statewide has grown, particularly since the Florida Department of Environmental Protection became certified to receive Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) federal enhancement funds. As a result of this local agency funding mechanism, a 25 mile section within FDOT right-of-way was approved to construct a new and innovative pedestrian and bicycle trail.
With design and permitting challenges in this physically and environmentally constrained corridor, the Stantec team provided trail design and engineering, environmental permitting, surveying, and landscape design services—threading this trail through multiple, diverse environmental conditions. Our design incorporated outdoor classroom theming for the Florida Keys’ citizens, school children, and visitors. It promotes sustainable economic development within the Florida Keys through increased interaction between trail users and local businesses by providing convenient, non-motorized trail access to and from US 1 businesses located along the trail.
