This project enables NEORSD to meet critical consent decree requirements, resulting in fiscally sound solutions for the community
The majority of Greater Cleveland's century old sewage collection system is a combination of sanitary waste and stormwater in a single pipe. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) is at the forefront of implementing changes in response to an Environmental Protection Agency consent decree to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) by 98% over the next 25 years.
Stantec has played a key role in the design and management of many projects to assist NEORSD in meeting the objectives of this $3B program. We were the lead consultant responsible for design management and construction of the Easterly Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station (ETDPS). As one of the largest CSO pump stations in the United States, the ETDPS is critical to addressing CSOs in Cleveland. We completed a hydraulic analysis including a complex evaluation of conceptual layouts that led to the design of the ETDPS as a cavern-style layout 240-feet (73 metres) below ground.
ETDPS is capable of dewatering 160 million gallons (605 million litres) of CSO within 24 hours from three of NEORSD’s deep storage tunnels. The flow is then conveyed via an existing interceptor sewer for treatment at the Easterly WWTP. As a result, ETDPS helps to reduce urban flooding and discharge of sanitary sewage into the surrounding environment, and our innovative design provided $50 million in cost savings.
