This integrated stormwater and groundwater drainage system combines impressive scale with sustainable design principles
How does a rapidly growing city create resilience to changing rainfall patterns? Dubai needs a sustainable solution to provide resilience to extreme rainfall events and manage high levels of groundwater in an expanding urban area.
The solution, designed by our team in Dubai, is one of the largest integrated drainage tunnels in the region. The Dubai Deep Tunnel Storm Water System will drain 40% of the entire urban area of the city. It will serve the whole of Dubai South, which is home to Dubai’s new airport and the EXPO 2020.
The system has five elements, a groundwater and stormwater collection network; a 10km, 10m diameter, 45m deep tunnel; a holding pond; high efficiency pumping station; and a sea outfall. The design also allows for future solar power generation from a floating solar park on the holding pond.
This is not just a physical solution to a significant infrastructure challenge - our team took our client on a journey of policy innovation to allow adoption of Sustainable urban Drainage Systems for the first time in the region. By limiting storm flows at source, the built solution, although still impressive in scale, is optimized in size, cost and environmental performance.
