By upgrading a local wastewater treatment process, we helped protect the environment and the community
Until December 2012, the Ma’Amir area of Bahrain was not served by a sewage treatment plant or sewage or stormwater networks. The area suffered frequent flooding and often had private septic tanks overflow into public areas, contaminating groundwater. We were brought in to find a solution that would show our client’s commitment to environmental protection for the community.
With our design, this plant was the first ever advanced membrane bioreactor in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and it produces recycled water for reuse. Under our supervision, the plant was constructed on time and under budget by a relatively small local contractor despite poor ground conditions at the site. And the result? New drainage and sewerage networks were designed to connect to the communities.
For the communities, both industrial and residential, in the small town of Ma’Amir, this project converted a significant environmental and public health challenge into a world-class asset. These days, the facility continues to produce recycled water that exceeds the quality requirements for unlimited reuse.
