Navigating complex environmental and social impacts associated with building large-scale infrastructure
Our team was selected by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Pakistan to lead a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) for the Diamer Basha Dam Project (DBDP). When built, this dam will be vital to Pakistan’s future water, food, and energy security.
For this multi-year effort, we mobilized a team of 160 technical experts and support staff to work on the ESIA and help USAID and the Government of Pakistan (GoP) better understand the complex impacts a large-scale dam would have on the surrounding communities. Using international standards for environmental and social performance, we assessed a wide range of issues in light of global climate change (GCC), glacial hazards, and trans-boundary effects. We also considered aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity, socioeconomics, emergency preparedness, cultural heritage, resettlement, and gender equality and social inclusion.
Through our longstanding commitment to quality, we delivered environmentally and technically sound advice and are now contributing to continuing related efforts. We are part of a recently awarded joint venture (JV) contract for the dam’s construction design, construction supervision, and contract administration.
