Designing a train communication and signal system to help eliminate collisions and excessive speeding

9 million – that’s how many commuters trust Caltrain’s rail system for smooth and safe travel. Caltrain takes this responsibility very seriously and partenered with Stantec to design a communication and signal system to help eliminate collisions and excessive speeding. Known as Positive Train Control (PTC), the system means a safer ride for families living along the 77 mile Caltrain route.

PTC increases safety and operating performance by providing interoperability between various rail services on the same line. This means more frequent and dependable service to meet growing demand. Integrated communication improves coordination between public vehicles and commuters for improved safety.

The team worked closely on a comprehensive project approach to guide the design and construction schedule. Technical plan specifications, cost effective systems procurement, and communication support for rail operations ensured a successful project completion and a safe Caltrain community.

We’re also thinking of California’s future by designing the PTC system to be compatible with both Caltrain’s future electrification and services proposed by the California High Speed Rail Authority.
