CPV St. Charles incorporates innovative design features that make it among the cleanest conventional power generating facilities in Maryland.
The CPV St. Charles Energy Center is a 725-megawatt natural gas-fueled combined cycle power plant that generates enough electricity to power 700,000 homes. To prevent the plant from being a strain on local water resources, the plant’s innovative design employs a cooling system that utilizes reclaimed water from the Mattawoman Wastewater Treatment Facility and returns plant wastewater to that same facility. The plant began commercial operation in March 2017.
We provided owner’s engineer services to CPV, coordinating the overall integration of the engineering and design of the EPC contractor, the suppliers, and the offsite contractors installing the reclaimed water, fuel gas, potable water, and sewer pipelines. Key drawings and documents from each of these contractors were reviewed by our teams, and comments were resolved with the applicable contractor. During construction, one of our engineers was assigned to the site to assist the CPV construction management team. We also supported the commissioning and start-up phases, including the review of performance test protocols.
With our team’s timely, detailed, and professional communication process, CPV was able to take the necessary action to improve their project. The result? A plant that fits right into the community.
