Using the waste heat from the gas turbines to generate steam significantly increased the efficiency of the plant

Stantec, in joint venture with Sargent & Lundy, provided full engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) support services to ATCO Power and Ontario Power Generation Inc. on this natural, gas-fired power plant located along the Detroit River. The plant is a combined cycle facility capable of generating up to 580 MW of electricity, and is the largest facility of this type in Canada. This environmentally progressive project consisted of two state-of-the-art gas turbines and a single steam turbine to achieve high efficiency and low emissions in the production of electricity.

This project took the output of three generators, with a combined capacity of 550 MW to the nearby Hydro One, Keith Substation. Three unit step-up transformers were used to bring the output of the units to the transmission voltages, and two transmission lines were used to interconnect the generating station to the substation at 230 kV and 115 kV. The two transmission lines were terminated on the ring bus system inside the substation. Stantec was responsible for the protection of the generator unit transformers, unit auxiliary transformers, transmission line protection, and for interfacing with Hydro One to ensure the proper overlap of protection was provided.
