This facility turns municipal solid waste into fuel alternatives and recyclables into construction materials
In the last few decades we’ve been pretty responsible about our recycling and solid waste. The problem is, the market for recycled products hasn’t kept up with the volume produced. That means a lot of recyclables are still headed to landfills. When Continuus Material Recovery, a waste to resources company, wanted to find a new use for these materials (other than trash to fuel, which they were already involved in), they chose a high-performance sustainable architectural board.
This application has many uses in commercial construction, and with our help, they set out to convert their existing fuel facility to accommodate a separate line for high-volume board manufacturing. The facility will receive waste, separate the recyclable materials, produce the boards, and then package and deliver them to their destination.
We worked closely with equipment vendors to develop specifications for the complex separation process, also calling on experts throughout Stantec on conveyor system design and similar heavy industrial products, such as oriented strand board.
Turning unused recyclable materials into a valuable commodity is the heart of the circular economy. The work that Continuus Material Recovery is doing with this facility will improve the scale and effectiveness of recycling and sustainable resource management.
