We aimed to enhance communication and coordination between the communities and the military installation.
Camp Lejeune is the United States Marine Corps’s largest east coast base and has been in operation since 1941. When Onslow County wanted to identify and mitigate potential conflicts around the camp, our team was selected to create a joint land use study (JLUS).
We conducted in-depth land use and zoning evaluations for the area around the base to develop long-term, proactive strategies to minimize land use conflicts. Our goal? Work to protect the mission of Camp Lejeune while supporting the continued health and growth of the local community and economy of Onslow County.
Our team worked closely with Camp Lejeune and the municipalities of Onslow County to identify the issues important to each entity and to address concerns in a comprehensive manner. The ultimate success of our JLUS approach is the implementation of recommendations and guidelines for both the military and communities to promote compatible development, increase personal health and safety, increase installation security, and build active working relationships in pursuit of supportive implementation.
This JLUS produced a set of recommendations that will lead to compatible physical and economic development opportunities to be acted upon by local jurisdictions, stakeholders, entrepreneurs, organizations, and existing businesses.
