An important first step in planning for resilience
Located on the southwest coast of Florida, Bonita Bay is a 2,400-acre (971-hectare) master planned community that’s vulnerable to many natural hazards such as hurricanes, flooding, and extreme winds. The community has faced significant impacts from storms—notably Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Irma in 2017—that severely damaged community assets. Now, with a rapidly changing climate, natural threats may be increasing in frequency and severity, so the Bonita Bay Community Association engaged our help.
We prepared a vulnerability assessment to assist the Community Association in determining existing and future natural risks to their most vulnerable assets. Our study focused on community-owned amenities such as recreational parks, golf courses, walking trails, roadways, lakes and natural areas, a private beach, the Bonita Bay Club, and the Bonita Bay Marina.
The results of this vulnerability assessment will assist the community with planning and adapting assets to natural hazards such as sea level rise, storm surge, extreme rainfall, heat, wind, and saline intrusion—and will guide them in prioritizing valuable resources in the development of a more resilient community.
