A proactive, cost-effective approach to improve safety where it’s needed most
Bicycle and pedestrian crash fatalities have been on the rise on roads across South Carolina. As part of the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s (SCDOT) commitment to reversing this trend, they contracted with us to perform bicycle and pedestrian road safety audits (RSAs) for eight of the top ten corridors on their non-motorized safety project list. The list was based on the statewide corridors with the highest number of bicycle and pedestrian crashes per mile.
We conducted RSAs with SCDOT and stakeholders—including local government engineering and planning departments, councils of government, metropolitan planning organizations, emergency responders, law enforcement, and advocacy groups. Our team was charged with identifying opportunities for safety improvements by considering safety of all road users, qualitatively estimating, and reporting potential road safety issues.
After performing bicycle and pedestrian RSAs for several corridors in Charleston, we’ve documented the results of each study and compiled them in a bound RSA report. Our studies identify specific measures for improving safety, estimating their costs, and prioritizing the improvements. The report will be used as a basis for funding the improvements needed.
