Setting the bar for sustainable studio development
The United Kingdom is facing exponential growth in demand for studio space–bringing the community with you on a development of this scale is far from easy.
Engaging with local schools and the University of Reading to showcase the inspiring career paths a studio offers, our planners and designers led a two-way conversation that shaped the proposals for this million square-foot film and TV production facility. As well as clearly setting out the economic benefits, sustainability and landscaping were integral to a successful and popular scheme. Our landscape design experts were involved from the earliest stages, integrating the site into its rural context, creating visual buffers, and complementing the studios’ industrial aesthetic. Wildlife corridors and careful planting have also enhanced local biodiversity and habitats and appealed to residents.
The proposals received widespread support from the community, the council, the Department for International Trade, and the British Film Commission. Four stages at the studios are already operational, with the remaining stages and space expected to be complete by the end of 2023. As the industry continues to boom, Shinfield has set the standard for community-minded studio development and will become the fourth largest studio facility in the UK, behind Pinewood, Shepperton, and Leavesden Studios.
