A series of major road improvements
The A82 is a main road in Scotland that links the major cities of Glasgow and Inverness. It’s mostly trunk road set within the dramatic landscape of the Loch Lomond, a popular tourist route and transport link. However, the Loch Lomond section of the road is a notorious bottleneck due to narrow roads, tight bends, poor visibility, and slippery road conditions. The result? Low driving speeds, high accident rates, and poor journey time reliability.
Designing an upgrade for the route is the first in a series of major road improvements commissioned by Transport Scotland.
We developed supporting economic analyses to help select the most appropriate route. In June 2015, the project was approved to go to detailed design and our economists are continuing to support the process.
The route option assessment process has considered the scheme objectives and the Scottish Government’s five appraisal criteria, namely; environment, safety, economy, integration, and accessibility and social inclusion. When the A82 improvements are complete, it’ll mean smoother journeys by creating safer, wider roads, with high visibility and greater road conditions.
