Matching funding to vision for Queenstown
Queenstown has experienced rapid population and tourism growth resulting in competing demands for land use. To facilitate growth and prepare for the return of tourists to Queenstown, and to maintain its reputation as a world-class destination and enhance its place quality, improvements to the transport system are critical.
We developed the Queenstown Transport Business Case to identify a suite of multi-modal interventions and funding pathways for a 30-year programme to transform the transport system with a high-capacity public transport network at its core. Inertia could cost New Zealand $1 billion in potential lost revenue.
Our primary focus is to move people out of cars so that by 2048, 60% of people are using public transport, cycling, or walking on state highway 6A during the evening peak, and road transport emissions in the district reduce by 15%. We want to increase people trip capacity by more than 100% and save travel time by 30% for people taking public transport between Frankton and Queenstown.
People will continue to enjoy the town centre—we want to make it easy to get to and build the environment to complement the natural environment. Ideally there’ll be increased commercial activity without major impacts on the environment or residents’ employment.
