Te Awarua-o-Porirua (Porirua Harbour) Restoration Plan

Increases in urban development, agriculture, and road infrastructure have caused ongoing ecological degradation to the riparian margins of Te Awarua-o-Porirua (Porirua Harbour)—a crucial marine and coastal inlet and tidal area. To slow and, where possible, reverse the damage, Porirua City Council (PCC) engaged us to develop a detailed restoration plan entailing what, where, and how these riparian margins could be restored.

Te Awarua-o-Porirua’s exposed estuarine environment consists of three main areas—Pāuatahanui Inlet, the Onepoto Arm, and the outer harbor. Working within the site’s typologies and constraints as well as previous and future efforts, our ecologists and landscape architects consulted with PCC to develop an approach to restore, extend, and protect Indigenous wildlife. We identified treatments and phasing strategies that supplement the ecological and biodiversity outcomes as part of an overarching effort to sustainably manage degrading coastal margins.

This restoration plan now forms part of PCC’s 2051 work plan and helps highlight the importance of these coastal margins for communities during flood events. Plus, PCC has climate adaptation initiatives they can take now to help protect Te Awarua-o-Porirua into the future—an effort we’re proud to be a part of.
