We’ve been helping Lyttelton Port recover from a major earthquake
Lyttelton Port is the largest port in New Zealand’s South Island and provides the trade gateway to keep the region moving. After the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake its infrastructure was badly damaged.
Since 2014, our Christchurch Transportation team has been helping the Port recover, plan for future growth, and develop site facilities so it can meet future freight movements and improve community outcomes. We provided expert evidence for the Port’s recovery plan, a comprehensive integrated transport assessment which helped get consent to expand the container terminal at Te Awaparahi Bay and inputted to district plan review processes. Our team also developed complex onsite traffic management plans for reconstruction works to repair damaged jetties and created multi-modal transport access and parking layouts for Te Ana Marina, and heavy vehicle traffic engineering layouts to accommodate safe transfer of containers. Our Data and Analytics team provided an intelligent transport framework to improve container transfer queuing.
By providing transportation planning and traffic engineering advice and applying safe system thinking, our experts are helping the Port master plan and develop the Lyttelton Port, City Depot, and Midland Port sites—strengthening resilience for future natural events.
