We helped to transform the Rijeka Port into a strategic hub for the trade travelling from the Suez Canal to East Europe
The Rijeka Gateway Program is a development plan that aims to improve the competitiveness of Rijeka as a port city and to strengthen the transport routes connecting the Mediterranean to East Europe. As the last action of this program, the Port Authority of Rijeka commissioned the design and construction of a new quay and a container storage yard—the Zagreb Pier.
Stantec, in collaboration with F&M Ingegneria, followed the entire design process from bidding to detailed design. The project involved the construction of a new large quay, to be achieved in two phases, that extended the port-handling capacity of container ships. Based on an innovative use of the precast concrete caisson technology that we developed, the pier was conceived as a semi-open quay with an open deck in precast prestressed beams. Those beams lay on precast RC caissons with a maximum height of about 20 metres.
This solution assures a versatile structure that’s able to offer high performance in extremely hard environmental conditions such as heavy wave loadings, deep seabeds, and severe earthquake conditions. The result? A more flexible transportation hub for Rijeka Port.
