Improving the resilience of Wanaka’s future water supply

Planning for the future is essential for sustainable communities. With their growing population in mind, The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) wanted to support the resilience of Wanaka’s water supply scheme. In response, we were asked to research and assess options for future water sources for the popular lakeside town.

The Council’s key goals were to improve network resilience and increase conveyance capacity. Our study considered a number of options and the configuration of water system infrastructure including various lake intake sites, associated pump stations, and rising main routes for water supply. After this identification phase, we considered locations and routes with the potential to meet the requirements. We compared all options through a carbon accounting report, allowing QLDC to directly examine each potential carbon footprint. After a thorough risk assessment, the option that best matched the requirements proposed an intake with the potential to provide up to 70 per cent of Wanaka’s water supply.

Equipped with a plan that supports water network resilience and future growth, we’re proud to provide a sustainable path for the design and construction of Wanaka’s future water supply.
