Providing northern soccer players the opportunity to play on a world-class turf

Stantec was the prime architectural and engineering design consultant, providing architectural, electrical, mechanical and civil engineering services for the design of the Yellowknife Field House, a cost effective yet high quality facility that is valued by the residents of Yellowknife.

The Yellowknife Fieldhouse fills a wide gap in local recreational facility service delivery, alleviating pressure on existing facilities, providing northern soccer players the much-needed opportunity to play on a world-class surface, the building increases the competitive edge for our children at southern indoor soccer events.

The 7084 square metre facility features two regulation indoor soccer pitches, a second level, multi-use 200-metre running track, a child tending facility and a multi-use commercial rental unit. The space is supported with 8 full service change rooms for the soccer facility and 2 dedicated change rooms for track-users. The building is barrier-free on both levels engaging the inclusive spirit of the community while maximizing the potential user base for the complex. Bleachers accommodating 500 spectators are be moveable, allowing conversion for trade shows during the off-season. A large, daylight-filled lobby serves as a colourful, spacious gathering place with food service and staff control points.

The building was designed to meet LEED® Silver certification with high-energy performance criteria and low-water use, best practice construction processes and reclaimed/recycled materials. The facility will use waste heat from the adjacent multiplex ice plant for under floor heating of the fields and childcare space. The running track will feature bands of glazing allowing daylight into the play space and views for runners to Kam Lake and the natural northern landscape.
