Kitikmeot Inuit Association Office Building
The Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) is a business development corporation in western Nunavut, representing the regional interests of Nunavummiut by protecting and promoting their social, cultural, political, environmental, and economic wellbeing. To create a solid identity and bring all of their various organizations under one roof, the KIA needed a new office building—and we designed it.
The atrium and shallow floorplate placements were paramount to the KIA’s design strategy. As a main feature, south-facing glazing in the two-and-a-half storey atrium brings light into the circulation space, creating a public gathering area and gallery with alcove seating at stair landings between the two second floors. A skylight with a mirrored well directs light deep into the entryway of the conference room. To ensure ample daylighting for every office, ancillary and support services occupy the core of the long narrow work areas.
On the exterior, the atrium is painted black to maximize solar gain and to function as a beacon during winter whiteouts. The main level accommodates the more interactive arm of the association, while a wide ramp down to the conference area affords increased ceiling heights for public functions.
With their new facility, KIA is better equipped to support the community and the people who live and work there.
