This community gathering spot features renewable, recycled, and resilient elements.

When Beaverbrook Developments began to transform the former site of Pioneer Meadows Golf Course in Southeast Edmonton, one of their priorities was to create a residential development that had sustainable and resilient design at its foundation. That development was the Hills at Charlesworth, a community-focused creation that aims to deliver life-changing homes for their residents.

And at the front door? A unique centerpiece made of a giant-sized watering can and panels from old shipping containers. The panels collect rainwater into the watering can, which is a salvaged culvert that now services the nearby community gardens. The community gardens, as part of the sustainability plaza, are a year-round, colorful showcase for sustainable initiatives and a natural gathering place for the residents of the new community.

The plaza is the core of the community’s urban village park and includes an ice ribbon, playground, and salvaged-material warming huts.

Our team—including planners, landscape architects, engineers, and geomatics scientists—worked with Beaverbrook to refine their vision for the Hills at Charlesworth into an icon for sustainable neighborhood development in Alberta. The plaza is now a vibrant, year-round, educational, green demonstration space—and the pride of the community.
