Redevelopment of a former shipbuilding property to create a modern wallboard manufacturing facility

Atlantic Wallboard (Irving Wallboard), a division of J.D. Irving, Ltd., was looking to construct a modern gypsum wallboard plant in buildings formerly used by Saint John Shipbuilding Ltd. The facility would be used to produce commercial-grade wallboard products for the construction industry.

Stantec was engaged to assist with environmental assessment and permitting and the development of plant layouts. We provided civil, structural, mechanical, and piping design services during the scope definition, capital cost estimating, and detailed design phases of the project. Retrofitting the existing facility presented challenges in designing a low capital and operating cost system, particularly in areas of the building with high ceilings. The existing slab on grade floor required reinforcement and significant remediation to support the new equipment. Our team also provided services for scheduling, planning, and development of the contracting strategy to meet the aggressive project schedule.

Now complete, the facility provides a broad range of wallboard products from the reprocessing of synthetic gypsum from in-province flue-gas desulfurization facilities, supplemented as needed by natural gypsum to be imported from out-of-province sources.
