Designing for energy savings and environmental efficiency
FLSmidth’s St. Mary’s Cement Plant wanted to upgrade their Bowmanville facility by installing a lime hydrator system in the string preheater tower. FLSmidth’s goal was to use this reference facility to install new prototype technology that would result in considerable energy savings and less impact on the environmental footprint. With our in-depth knowledge of FLS equipment and design procedures, we were selected to provide civil and structural engineering to support the successful completion of the work.
The system FLSmidth wanted to implement replaces the hydrated lime injection system and eliminates the need to purchase hydrated lime or operate truck unloading and injection equipment. It was critical to keep the facility operational, so installation had to be completed during the plant shut-down period. Working together with FLSmidth, our team came up with solutions to integrate the new system into an existing concrete preheater tower with minimal impact to the operations.
With the completion of this project, the facility continues to produce high quality cement used for construction. As the end user is now less dependent on outsourced hydrated lime, they can minimize deliveries and transportation. This has led to energy savings due to reduced transportation, handling, and storing costs, and the project can now be used as a prototype to showcase an environmentally-concious system.
