Enhancing accessibility, capacity, and environmental sustainability

When the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MTO) set out to upgrade ferry services to Amherst Island and Wolfe Island in Eastern Ontario, they needed several shoreside infrastructure projects to get ready for their new electric ferries. The goal? Creating new, amenity-rich ferry dock configurations to improve environmentally friendly accessibility to and from the islands.

Our team worked on four separate contracts for this massive infrastructure redevelopment project. We completed the preliminary design and environmental assessment for the Kingston, Marysville, and Dawson Point terminals on Wolfe Island. We also completed the design-build for the Amherst Island ferry dock improvements, which involved major reconstruction and expansion of both the mainland and island terminals for this route. On our third and fourth projects, we served as the prime consultant for the detail design of the Kingston Ferry Dock improvements and the Marysville Ferry Dock improvements. These two projects involved a major reconstruction and expansion of the mainland and island terminals for the Wolfe Island Ferry.

The upgraded ferry docks will dramatically increase accessibility to and from the islands, with increased service capacity per boat and the potential to increase the frequency of the trips. The MTO anticipates that these projects will reduce Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions by 446 million kilograms (983 million pounds) of CO2 during the ferries’ 60-year lifespans.
