An integrative approach to solving the demands of a growing population
A growing population requires adaptive and creative approaches to solving associated challenges—Sydney being no exception. With a population set to rise by one million within the next ten years, the New South Wales government had to be innovative. The solution? A 12-kilometre (7.5-mile) light rail corridor and integrated transport system—spanning George Street, throughout the CBD to Surry Hills, Moore Park, Randwick, and Kingsford.
This additional capacity moves people through the city, whether attending a major sporting event, entertainment, university, or getting people to where they need to be without adding to congestion. Together with Transport for New South Wales and former Roads and Maritime Services, Stantec developed a multi-layered integrated transport model to support the planning, design, and construction of the scheme
The team tackled a complex transport system by developing and adopting innovative transport modelling solutions. We delivered a combined network of car, bus, and light rail with the assistance of extensive traffic simulation modeling. The new corridor, completed in 2020 despite several construction setbacks, addresses the needs of the growing population; to move, connect, and create flow in a bustling CBD.
