Implementing unobtrusive acoustics hardware in a complex public venue
When Perth Zoo wanted to improve how they communicated with their visitors, we came in to complete detailed acoustic modelling as well as the design of a site-wide digital public address (PA) system. The challenges? Working across an expansive site, maintaining public access during works, and minimising disruption to visitors and the Zoo’s inhabitants.
The new PA system utilises the Perth Zoo’s existing information and communications technology (ICT) network and included site-wide fibre optic reticulation. By using the existing ICT network, we were able to avoid site-wide cabling in many areas. Plus, with computer-simulated acoustic modelling, our team was able to ensure coverage, time alignment, and maximum speech intelligibility. We also used zone-specific “soundscaping” to enhance the visitor experience, such as lion noises in the African Savannah area.
The PA system delivers both commercial and operational benefits to Perth Zoo, including scheduled communication of events and keeper talks as well as assisting with visitor management at closing time. In the future, the system could be expanded to include CCTV, video and wi-fi across the zoo site.
