Upgraded education facilities for a growing community
With its population on the rise, Newcastle, New South Wales (NSW), like any growing community, requires multiple types of infrastructure. Education facilities are especially in demand, and School Infrastructure NSW needed a team to lead structural design for the Newcastle Education Campus. That’s where we came in.
Located on the site of the current Newcastle High School and in a mine subsidence zoned district, the facility had to meet the requirements of both School Infrastructure NSW and Subsidence Advisory NSW. Our local team provided civil and structural engineering services for the redevelopment of the site, which will include a new three-story learning hub and multipurpose facility.
Our design included concrete, masonry, and steel elements as well as a structural steel roof and wall framings that matched the architectural intent of the buildings. This allowed for capping and filling the ground under the buildings on the flood affected site while meeting requirements for water quality, reuse, and storage. Digital engineering practices allowed for real time coordination between disciplines, so we could provide a responsive and budget-friendly design.
The master planning, concept, and tender stages of this project have now been delivered, with construction expected to begin in early 2024. The campus will include upgrades to the existing high school location and expanded facilities, delivering modern, flexible learning spaces for over 1,400 students.
