Planning for future flood events for a coastal community nestled amongst hills and valleys

Knowing where the floodwaters travel in extreme rainfall events is critical for making communities safer. In the ever-growing Sunshine Coast region, Nambour is one community that has felt firsthand the devastation of flooding. To help with a stormwater plan for the next 10 years, the Sunshine Coast City Council asked us to design their Master Drainage Plan for the Nambour West study corridor.

We reviewed the existing stormwater network capacity and overlayed it with future growth plans for the area to create 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling. This showed overland and channel flows as well as predicted flooding in the study area. Using the latest software and our understanding of the Queensland Urban Drainage Manual, we created a range of maps that show predicted flood speed, depth, and hazard categories in the Nambour West study corridor.

Completed in 2020, the Master Drainage Plan provides the Council with an important piece in the planning and design for the future of Nambour West.
