Helping to identify the roadmap for correction centre expansion for the NT government and its communities
Expanding a correctional centre is not as simple as it might seem. Careful evaluation is needed to quantify the impact of supporting additional people and amenities, the changes to operational security models, and the capacity of existing services like water, gas, and electricity. There is also the issue of locating new structures to avoid in-ground services, and the impact of those buildings on fire and security plans.
With two primary correctional centres in Darwin and Alice Springs requiring expansion, the Northern Territory (NT) government asked us to help. As a result of population growth, both centres had come under pressure, requiring short-, medium-, and long-term planning in relation to the expansion and delivery of services. Our team assisted by developing options and quantifying the security and services works required at each site.
Drawing on our national experience in similar correctional expansion projects, the centres in Darwin and Alice Springs will continue to provide secure facilities focused on supporting rehabilitation and recidivism reduction targets to benefit Australian communities.
