Creating a much-needed opportunity for children and their families to relax in a supportive environment
Hummingbird House is the first children’s hospice in Queensland and the third in Australia. Our brief was to deliver a building services design that blends paediatric care with the child-friendly comforts of home.
Our sensitive lighting design played a major role; ocean imagery was paired with panel lighting in examination rooms to offer reassurance and relaxation, and LED lighting installed in bed-heads provides task lighting without impacting the relaxed bedroom vibe.
Taking consideration of the mixed building classification in play, our performance-based fire design achieves a discreet yet high standard of fire safety for occupants throughout the facility.
The Hummingbird room—where families end their respite journey—presented the greatest challenge in meeting temperature requirements. We introduced cold room technology into the AC and ventilation design without visually impacting the informal bedroom setting.
Working closely with the design team, our building services specialists successfully achieved the clinical services needed by staff to support palliative care—unobtrusively integrating function for the comfort and safety of patients and their families.
