Expanded student precinct at Robina better prepares future health professionals for the anticipated boom in aged care

In preparation for an anticipated increase of allied health service requirements and education precincts to adequately support this growth, Bond University, working with ADCO, set out to expand their existing health and sport precinct at Robina. They engaged our team to provide structural, civil, and sustainability services from detail design through construction.

The new five-story structure included column-free spans of up to 13.5 metres, which required us to design and document post-tensioned and reinforced concrete floor plates. We also had to accommodate an interconnecting bridge link between the new extension and existing building on Levels 2 and 3. We cantilevered the bridge off and supported it by the new building, only resting on roller type fixing points at the existing building side. This allowed the bridge to have minimal loading impact on the existing structure, which subsequently prevents any imposed vibration and bouncing effects.

The Bond Institute of Health and Sport building incorporates education and training facilities, along with two levels of open-deck carpark. In addition to a range of clinical spaces and community clinics, the facility includes a rehabilitation gym with a world-class laboratory, which is equipped with pressure sensors and high-speed cameras to analyse human movement to assist recovery and rehabilitation.
