How do you transition a vehicle fleet to ultra-low emission alternatives?
Renfrewshire Council wanted to review available options for transitioning their in-house transport fleet to ultra-low emission vehicles. Our job? Investigate the opportunities for the significant expansion of the Council’s electric vehicle fleet and assess a potential new fleet investment strategy as an alternative to the historic reliance on fossil fuel powered vehicles.
We reviewed ultra-low emission options for the range of vehicles in the Council’s fleet and assessed these against its operating requirements in terms of range and recharging to identify a short list of potential replacements. Next, we reviewed best practices from local authority operations around the UK and developed scenarios for an alternative investment strategy based around the variables of scope, procurement, and delivery timescale. This included supporting infrastructure such as vehicle charging facilities.
These scenarios were then costed, and procurement and funding options investigated, which led to our recommendation of a preferred strategy for electric vehicle investment by the Council, supported by evidence-based financial analyses. The Council subsequently secured government grants to implement our recommended fleet conversion programme.
